On August 28,2006, the Cape Breton Youth Detention Facility was opened. It is co-located on the same grounds as the Cape Breton Correctional Facility and shares services such as food and health services. Its purpose is to hold male and female young persons in custody for very short periods of time (up to 72 hours) when required to appear in court in eastern Nova Scotia or while awaiting transfer to the Nova Scotia Youth Facility. The Cape Breton Youth Detention Facility has a capacity to hold 8 youth.
