Amusement rides, like roller coasters and ferris wheels, provide fun and entertainment at carnival, fairs, and exhibitions across the province. Staff at Labour and Workforce Development monitor the safety of these amusements through inspections and licensing.
The Amusement Devices Safety Act provides for the inspection and licensing of amusement devices and temporary structures at carnivals, fairs, and amusement parks. The legislation ensures that the equipment is designed, assembled, dismantled, and operated in a manner that will guard against injuries to the general public. The latest edition of the Canadian Standards Association Safety Codes for Amusement Devices is followed by the inspectors in carrying out their duties under the act and regulations.
In order to operate an amusement device, it must be inspected by Labour and Workforce Development Elevators and Lifts Inspection Services. Licenses will be granted when a Certificate of Inspection has been issued and proof of financial responsibility has been provided to the Nova Scotia Gaming Control Commission. Financial responsibility means that insurance provisions have been made for persons injured or killed while in or about the equipment.
