Management of PCBs Contaminated Site at Five Island Lake

For over twenty five years, the Associated Metal and Electronic Salvage Yard, located within the community of Five Island Lake about 25 km south of Halifax, processed a variety of scrap materials, including electrical transformers and other equipment filled with polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). In 1988, the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour found that the site and neighbouring properties were contaminated with PCBs. The salvage yard was closed and placed under a Ministerial Order. The site is now managed by the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal in consultation with the Five Island Lake Community Liaison Committee.

Since 1988, the Department has secured the site to prevent further spread of contaminants and carried out remediation to clean up contaminated materials beyond the boundaries of the site, including removal of contaminated sediments from the North Bay of Five Island Lake. The Department implements an inspection and monitoring program and has developed an environmental management plan. Annual reports will be submitted to the Department of Environment and Labour and made available to the community.

The Department will continue to work with the Five Island Lake Community Liaison Committee and to review new contaminated site clean-up technologies as they become available.
