LESSON 3 - EFFECTS OF WEATHER, TOPOGRAPHY AND FUELS ON FIRE BEHAVIOR

3.2 Indices

Fuel Moisture Codes indicate:

FFMC (Fine Fuel Moisture Code)
Indication of the level of moisture in fine fuels (fuels smaller than an
average size finger) that are on the surface.

DMC (Duff Moisture Code)
Indication of the level of moisture of fuels that are below the surface to
a depth of 7 cm.

DC (Drought Code)
Indication of moisture levels in much larger fuels, and fuels well below
the surface (to a depth of 18 cm.).

General Fire Behavior indicates:

ISI (Initial Spread Index)
Numerical rating of the expected rate of spread.

BUI (Build Up Index)
Numerical rating of the total amount of available fuel for combustion.

FWI (Fire Weather Index)
Numerical rating of fire intensity level.

The Fire Weather Index System information is available between 2:00 - 2:30 PM every day during the regular fire season. Can be found at: https://novascotia.ca/protection/wildfire
