UPDATE BULLETIN

Bulletin # 13-08(Apr. 24/08) The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal advises that effective 12:01 am., Monday, April 28/08 Spring Weight Restrictions will be removed from the following Counties:

Annapolis, Digby, Kings, Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Halifax and Hants.

Spring weight restrictions will remain in effect until 12:01 am., Monday, May 5/08 in the following Counties:

Cumberland, Colchester, Pictou, Antigonish, Guysborough, Richmond, Inverness, Victoria and Cape Breton.

NOTE: The Department may still have individual roads posted for lower weights throughout the Province to prevent damage to the roadways. Industry are advised that the posted weights will be enforced.

Bulletin # 12-08(Apr. 14/08) Effective immediately the following road in Cape Breton County is exempt from Spring Weight Restrictions:

Beechmont Road:    From Frenchvale Road to the Beechmont Quarry (Municipal Ready-Mix Limited), 5.1 km.

Bulletin # 11-08 (Mar. 25/08)Further to Bulletin # 10-08, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal advises that effective 8:00 am, Wednesday, March 26/08 Spring Weight Restrictions come back into effect in all Counties of the Province until further notice.

NOTE: The Department may still have individual roads posted for lower weights throughout the Province to prevent damage to the roadways. Industry are advised that the posted weights will be enforced.

Bulletin # 10-08 (Mar. 25/08)The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal advises that effective 12:01 am, Wednesday, March 26/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted until 8:00 am, Wednesday, March 26/08 in the following Counties of the Province: Inverness, Richmond, Victoria, Guysborough, Antigonish, Colchester and Cumberland

Spring Weight Restrictions will remain in effect in the following Counties of the Province until further notice: Cape Breton, Pictou, Halifax, Hants, Kings, Annapolis, Digby, Yarmouth, Shelburne, Queens and Lunenburg

Bulletin # 9-08 (Mar. 20/08)The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal advises that effective 10:00 am, Thursday, March 20/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be back into effect in all Counties of the Province.

Effective 10:00 pm, Sunday, March 23/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted in all Counties of the Province until 10:00 am, Monday, March 24/08.

Effective 10:00 pm, Monday, March 24/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted in all Counties of the Province until 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 25/08.

Effective 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 25/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be back into effect in all Counties of the Province until further notice.

Bulletin # 8-08(Mar. 17/08) Effective immediately the following road in Cape Breton County is exempt from Spring Weight Restrictions:

Frenchvale Road:    From Highway 125 to the Beechmont Road.

Bulletin # 7-08 (Mar. 17/08) The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal advises that effective 10:00 pm, Monday, March 17/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted in all Counties of the Province until 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 18/08.

Effective 10:00 pm, Tuesday, March 18/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted in all Counties of the Province until 10:00 am, Wednesday, March 19/08.

Effective 10:00 pm, Wednesday, March 19/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted in all Counties of the Province until 10:00 am, Thursday, March 20/08.

Effective 10:00 am, Thursday, March 20/08, Spring Weight Restrictions will be back into effect in all Counties of the Province until further notice.

Bulletin # 6-08(Mar. 13/08) Further to Bulletin # 4-08 issued on March 12/08, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal advises that effective 10:00 pm, Saturday, March 15/08 Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted until 10:00 am, Sunday March 16/08 in the following Counties:
Cape Breton, Victoria, Inverness, Richmond, Guysborough, Antigonish, Pictou, Colchester, Cumberland, Halifax, and Hants.

Spring Weight Restrictions will not be temporarily lifted at 10:00 pm Saturday, March 15/08 in the following Counties:
Kings, Annapolis, Digby, Yarmouth, Shelburne, Queens and Lunenburg.

Bulletin # 5-08(Mar. 12/08) Effective immediately the following road in Guysborough County has been posted at Maximum Weight 12 tonnes until further notice:

North Riverside Road:    From Cross Road to North Intervale Road

Bulletin # 4-08 (Mar. 12/08) The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal advises that Spring Weight Restrictions come back into effect in all Counties of the Province at 10:00 am, Wednesday, March 12/08.

Effective 10:00 pm, Thursday, March 13/08 Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted in all Counties of the Province until 10:00 am, Friday, March 14/08.

Effective 10:00 pm, Friday, March 14/08 Spring Weight Restrictions will be temporarily lifted in all Counties of the Province until 10:00 am, Saturday, March 15/08.

Effective 10:00 am, Saturday, March 15/08 Spring Weight Restrictions will be back into effect in all Counties of the Province until further notice.

Bulletin # 3-08 (Mar. 11/08) Effective 10:00 pm, Tuesday, March 11/08 the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal is temporarily lifting Spring Weight Restrictions in all Counties, Province wide.

The restrictions will be lifted until 10:00 am, Wednesday, March 12/08..

Bulletin # 2-08(Mar. 10/08) Effective immediately, the following roads in Kings County are exempt from Spring Weight Restrictions:

Kings County:
Victoria Road:    From junction of Trunk 1 at Aylesford northerly to junction of Route 221, 2.8 km.

Route 221:    From the junction of Victoria Road easterly to Northridge Farms compost depot, 0.9 km.

Bulletin # 1-08(Mar. 6/08)Effective immediately, the following road in Halifax County is exempt from Spring Weight Restrictions:

Halifax County:
Trunk 7    Porters Lake from the intersection of the western end of Parker Lane easterly to the intersection of Alps Road, 5.1 km.


IN THE MATTER OF SECTION 20 OF THE PUBLIC HIGHWAYS ACT,

ORDER

Pursuant to Section 20 (1) of Chapter 371 of the Revised Statutes of Nova Scotia, the Public Highways Act, Kevin Caines, the Executive Director Maintenance and Operations of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal hereby orders that:

  • the Weight Restrictions set out below (hereafter referred to as "Spring Weight Restrictions"), shall apply to public highways in the zones shown for the time period indicated in Table A, and
  • the roads set out in Appendix 1, attached hereto, are exempt from the Spring Weight Restrictions.

SPRING WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The maximum vehicle and axle weights permitted by this order are as follows:

  • Maximum single axle weight of 6,500 kg except single drive school and passenger buses, public utility service trucks, and fire fighting trucks;
  • Maximum tandem or triple axle weight of 12,000 kg;
  • Maximum gross vehicle weight of 12,000 kg for single drive school and passenger buses, public utility service trucks, and fire fighting trucks that exceed 6,500 kg on a single axle;

Exemptions are as follows:

(a) public utility service trucks while responding to emergency situations, where an emergency situation includes the restoration of services or the establishment of new services to occupied buildings.

(b) fire fighting trucks while responding to emergency situations, where an emergency situation includes attending actual fires, medical crises, motor vehicles accidents, and assisting in fire investigations.

For purposes of this Order, the following Definitions apply:

1. "Single Axle" means an axle which transfers the load carried by it approximately equally to the wheel or wheels attached to each end of the axle.

2. "Tandem-Axle" means an axle assembly containing two (2) consecutive axles whose centres are not less than 1.20 metres apart,

    2.1 attached to the vehicle in such a manner that the load on the axle group is equalized on the two (2) axles, and

    2.2 equipped with brakes on both axles.

3. "Triple-Axle" means an axle assembly of three (3) consecutive axles with the centres of no two (2) consecutive axles less than 1.20 metres apart, and

    3.1 attached to the vehicle in such a manner that the load on the axle group is equalized on three (3) axles, and

    3.2 equipped with brakes on all three axles.

4. "Gross Vehicle Weight" means the sum of the individual axle weights of all axles of the vehicle or combination of vehicles.
