The B.Eng/B.Sc.Eng Sponsorship Program

My main function as a Project Engineer is to ensure all highway and bridge construction projects assigned to me get completed within budget and to the Department's high standard. Working with a staff of twelve, I estimate, supervise and finalize between $5 to $10 million of construction work each year. I also work on an implementation committee and attend several conferences and training programs each year.

There are several aspects of this position that I enjoy including:

  • The freedom of managing my own field office and my own projects from start to finish.
  • Meeting people on all levels involved in construction and consulting.
  • Having the flexibility to try different positions within the Department - laterally, or upwards, there are several directions I can move in.

I would recommend the Project Engineer position because it gets you started with a lot of responsibility and tools (office, staff, laptop, smart phone, digital camera), and you gain a wide range of practical experience (project management, cost estimating, roadway design/construction, bridge design/construction and plan interpretation, staff performance management, property acquisition, working with public, union regulations, labour and environment regulations, occupational health and safety regulations). - Matt Covey
