A Typical Day in Nova Scotia in 2003


24 LIVE BIRTHS OCCURRED IN THE PROVINCE TO NOVA SCOTIA RESIDENTS:

  • 12 males and 12 females
  • 5 babies were born every 7 days to teenage mothers
  • 9 were born to parents not married to each other
  • 2 live births were registered with no father named
  • 4 low birth weight babies were born every 3 days (< 2500 grams)
  • 1 multiple birth occurred every 3 days
  • 1 stillbirth occurred every 6 days

22 DEATHS OCCURRED IN THE PROVINCE TO NOVA SCOTIA RESIDENTS:

  • 11 males and 11 females
  • 7 deaths were due to diseases of the circulatory system including:
    • 4 - deaths from heart disease
    • 2 - deaths from cerebrovascular diseases
  • 6 deaths were due to cancer including:
    • 2 from lung cancer
  • 2 deaths were due to diseases of the respiratory system
  • 4 deaths every 5 days resulted from accident or violence
  • 3 deaths every 4 days were due to diabetes
  • 4 deaths every 7 days were due to Alzheimer’s disease
  • 1 death occurred every 121 days due to AIDS/HIV infections
  • 1 infant death occurred every 8 days

13 MARRIAGES WERE SOLEMNIZED IN NOVA SCOTIA:

  • 4 were civil ceremonies and 9 were performed by religious representatives
  • 9 marriages were to couples where both parties were marrying for the first time
  • 1 marriage every 40 days was to a couple where both parties were teenagers

1 DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP DECLARATION WAS FILED EVERY 6 DAYS
