Registry of Motor Vehicles - Veteran Plates

iVeteran Plates are available to any person who has honourably served in:

  1. the Canadian Forces, the armed forces of another Commonwealth country, the armed forces of a wartime ally of Canada or another commonwealth country, or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police while on United Nations service or on a peacekeeping mission, for a minimum of three years, in one or more of these services,
  2. the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during wartime, or
  3. a theatre of war as a member of the Canadian Forces, or the armed forces of another Commonwealth country or a wartime ally of Canada or another Commonwealth country.

Application forms for a Veteran plate are available at any Registry of Motor Vehicles / Access Nova Scotia location or any branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Nova Scotia. To download an application form for printing, click here.

• Applicants are required to send the Application for Veteran Plate Eligibility Certification to the Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, along with proof of eligibility and a stamped, self-addressed envelope, for return of the certified application.

• The certified application form will be returned to the applicant.

• The applicant must submit the certified application form and Statement of Insurance form to a Registry of Motor Vehicles office for the issuance of a veteran plate.   For more information, click here.

• Veteran plates will be issued, in sequential order, to passenger vehicles (cars and station wagons) and light commercial vehicles up to 5000 kg (trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans).

• The registration fee for a veteran plate will be the standard fee associated with the class and weight of vehicle being registered, plus an additional $5.36 fee at the time of issuance. For future renewals, regular plate renewal fees will apply.

• Applicants may apply to replace their current regular alpha-numeric licence plate with a veteran plate, at any time, by returning their current plate and paying a fee of $5.36. Applicants do not have to wait until their current plate expires.
