Registry of Motor Vehicles - A History of Nova Scotia Licence Plates: 1970-1996

1970

Refl. Yellow/Black DEC.70 validation stickers, affixed to lower right sticker box.
1971

Black/refl. Yellow DEC.71 validation stickers, same format as '70 stickers.

1972

Ocean Blue on White; NOVA SCOTIA at top centre, undated sticker boxes in both upper corners; slogan CANADA'S OCEAN PLAYGROUND across the bottom. Plates were undated for 1972.

Note: From 1973 onwards, odd year stickers affixed to upper right corner, even year stickers affixed to upper left corner of plates.

1973

Yellow/Orange vinyl DEC.73 validation stickers, affixed to upper right corner box.

1974

Orange/Yellow vinyl DEC.74 validation stickers.

1975

Refl. White/Black DEC.75 validation stickers. Medium Blue on Reflective White plates also introduced in June for new registrations, same format as '72 plates.

1976

Red/refl. White DEC.76 validation stickers.

1977

Refl. White/Green DEC.77 validation stickers.

1978

Blue/refl. White DEC.78 validation stickers.

1979

Refl. Red/Black DEC.79 validation stickers. Alpha-numeric plates introduced in June for new and transfer car registrations; Process Blue on Reflective White; same format as '72 and '75 plates, except that numbering began at AAA-001. 

A staggered registration system is also implemented with the issuance of the alpha-numeric plates, with the earliest registrations expiring in June '80. Validation stickers dated Dec.31 continue to be issued to renewals of all-numeric plates through 1986. Validation stickers for staggered registrations are slightly larger and in a different format, indicating both the month and year of expiration.

Green/refl. Beige stickers.

1981

Refl. White/Red stickers.
1982

Refl. White/Blue stickers.
1983

Refl. White/Green stickers.
1984

Refl. White/Black stickers.
1985

Red/Refl. Yellow stickers.
1986

Black/refl. Green stickers (for staggered); Refl. Green/Black (for Dec. 31).
1987

Black/refl. Magenta stickers.
1988

Black/refl. Light Yellow stickers.
1989

Blue/refl. White stickers. New plates introduced in April 1989, in the same basic format, but featuring the schooner "Bluenose" screen-printed in blue and light blue in the centre of plates. Province name and slogan are also screen-printed (instead of embossed) on the reflective white background sheeting, in medium blue. "Bluenose" plates began at BRT 001.
1990

Green/refl. Beige stickers.
1991

Refl. White/Magenta stickers.
1992

Refl. White/Black stickers.
1993

Red/refl. Beige stickers.
1994

Black/refl. Green stickers. Two-year (24 month) registrations begun in 1994.
1995

Single plates first issued in Nov. 1995, with front plates no longer required.
1996

Black/refl. Yellow stickers.
