Application Forms & Process:
With this Registration, there are two different ways to submit your application form:

A) You can send in a hard copy. You can get a form by:
       (1) downloading a form from the WCB website;
       (2) calling, writing or visiting the WCB offices listed above.

B) You can fill it out online. Not applicable to special protection.

If you wish to apply online, click here.  This process begins by entering the Nova Scotia Business Registry.  Before you begin, make sure you have at hand the information listed below.

Information you will need to fill out your application form:

  • Your 9 digit CRA BN (if you are a LTD).
  • Your company's average monthly payroll.
  • For any payroll accounts with Canada Revenue Agency, you will need the 9-digit business number, the 4-digit RP number and frequency of payments.
  • The name and address of your company's financial institution (bank or credit union).

The completed application is submitted to the WCB.

Once the Employer Registration form is received by the WCB and approved, the applicant will be assessed a premium based on actual payroll figures during specific reporting periods. If it is determined by the WCB that the applicant is not required to have coverage, the applicant may request to have voluntary or special protection by contacting the WCB directly.

Generally, coverage does not expire, with the exception of special protection which expires each year on December 31.

Additional Information:
The Minister responsible for the Workers' Compensation Act is the Minister of Environment and Labour.

The Workers` Compensation Act of Nova Scotia requires that firms, in most industries, which employ three or more workers at the same time register for coverage. This includes full time, part time, or casual workers and workers hired through a Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) grant. It also includes subcontractors who work in mandatory industries and the owners, officers and directors of the company.

For the self-employed or workers for which coverage is not required, voluntary or special protection coverage is optional.

A full list of industries for which coverage is mandatory (pending the 3-worker rule) is given in Appendix A of the Workers' Compensation General Regulations, made under Section 184 of the Workers' Compensation Act.
