The Minister responsible for the Workers' Compensation Act
is the Minister of Environment and Labour.
The Workers` Compensation Act of Nova Scotia requires that firms,
in most industries, which employ three or more workers at the same time
register for coverage. This includes full time, part time, or casual
workers and workers hired through a Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) grant. It also includes subcontractors who work in mandatory industries and the owners,
officers and directors of the company.
For the self-employed or workers for which coverage is not required,
voluntary or special protection coverage is optional.
A full list of industries for which coverage is mandatory (pending
the 3-worker rule) is given in Appendix A of the Workers'
Compensation General Regulations, made under Section 184 of the
Workers' Compensation Act.
