Live Birth Registration

Who Needs This Registration?

The parent of a newborn child in Nova Scotia needs this registration. If the birth is not properly registered, a birth certificate cannot be issued.

Issuing Department / Agency:

Any local division Registrar of Births and Stillbirths properly authorized by the Government of Nova Scotia.

Where can you get this Registration and / or further information?
Any Local division Registrar of Births and Stillbirths properly authorized by the Government of Nova Scotia. These can be reached through the Medical Records Director at your local hospital.
Application Forms & Process:

The parent completes the registration form in the hospital at the time of the birth. When the form is completed, it is submitted to the Local Division Registrar at the hospital, who signs it and then forwards it to the Vital Statistics Section, Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

The registration form should be submitted within 30 days.

If more than a year goes by before it is filed, then: (a) a Delayed Registration of Birth will have to be filed, and (b) evidence of the birth will have to be produced, and (c) there will be a fee of $24.20 for the delayed filing.

Additional forms may be required.  The Local Division Registrar will advise the parent(s) after they review the completed form.

Additional Information:

The receipt of the registration form is not acknowledged by the Vital Statistics Office.
