Motor Vehicle Inspection Tester Licence

Who Needs This Licence?
  Any person in Nova Scotia who wants to participate in the N.S. Motor Vehicle Inspection Program requires a Tester Licence.

Note: This licence is only issued to employees of a licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection Station.  Licence holders must have certification in one of the following trades to conduct inspections on passenger or light commercial vehicles:

1) Automotive Service Technician; or
2) Service Station Mechanic.

Hours:
Monday & Tuesday:
8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 8:30 am to 7:00 pm (only Registry of Motor Vehicles services after 4:30)
Saturday and Sunday: all offices and the Call Centre are closed.

Application Forms & Process:
 

Initial contact should be made with staff in either of the two above offices, in writing or in person or by phone.

Along with the application, you must submit the proper Certificate of Qualification, from the Department of Education, for the classes of vehicles to be tested.

Waiting Period:
  10 business days
Provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received
(Please allow several extra days for mail delivery.)
Expiry & Renewal:
  This licence is valid until December 31 of the calendar year in which it is issued.  It is renewable; the Department will send out a renewal notice  before it expires.
Price:  (No tax is charged)
 

Initial Application and Annual Renewal:  $10.19

Related Requirements:
  A holder of a Heavy Commercial Tester Licence requires one of the following Trade Apprenticeship Certificates of Qualification in the automotive repair trade (mechanical) through the N.S. Department of Education:

1)  Motor Vehicle Repair: Truck Transport;
2)  Motor Vehicle Repair: Bus and Transport.
Additional Information:
  The applicant must provide the Department with the Certificate of Qualification from the Department of Education that pertains to the type of vehicles they will be testing, and the applicant must have a valid driver's licence.
