Portable Fire Extinguishers Licence

Who Needs This Licence?
Anyone in Nova Scotia who wants to sell or service portable fire extinguishers.

Application Forms & Process:
An application form can be obtained from the Building, Fire and Technical Safety Division, Labour and Workforce Development. When completed, it is submitted to the Department, along with the applicable fees.

If an applicant wishes to service fire extinguishers, written and practical tests are administered and an inspection is then carried out to ensure compliance with the Standard for servicing portable fire extinguishers. (The Standard is the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) #10 - Portable Fire Extinguishers.)

If all requirements are met and the application is approved, the licence will be sent to the applicant by mail.
Waiting Period:
10 business days
Provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received
Expiry & Renewal:
This licence is valid for up to 1 year covering the period from January 1 of one year to December 31 of the same year. It can be renewed, and the renewal date is December 31 of the year of issue. The renewal process is started by the licence holder submitting a renewal application before the licence expires.

The renewal application must be accompanied by the applicable annual fee.
