Labour and Workforce Development - Fuel Safety Section

Fuel Safety (Technician's) Certificate

Who Needs This Certificate?
Anyone wishing to work with propane or natural gas in Nova Scotia.

This includes:
  1. installing, repairing, servicing or maintaining propane/natural gas appliances and equipment; and / or
  2. handling, delivering and transferring the product (propane).
Note: there are different classes of this certification reflecting various levels of competency. See Additional Information below.

Application Forms & Process:
You can get an application from by:
  1. Downloading a form from our website; or

  2. Calling one of the phone numbers listed above.
The Certification process includes a written exam, and a work experience training program.

If all requirements are met and the application is approved, the Certificate will be mailed to the applicant.
Waiting Period:
The Certificate is normally processed within 2 business days, once all items that must accompany the application have been received and all requirements are met.
Expiry & Renewal:
This Certificate is valid for the calendar year in which it is issued (January 1 to December 31). It is renewable, and a renewal notice will be mailed before it expires.
Price: (no tax is charged)

Initial Application:
Classes B, C, D, E and G (1-8): $57.95
Class G-9 & G-6:  $188.92
Class F: $28.98
Gas Technician's Licence: $28.98

Annual Renewal:
Classes B, C, D, E and G: $46.36
Class F: $28.98
Gas Technician's Licence: $28.98
Renewal of mulitple certifcates (any class): $46.36

Replacement Certificate: $17.39

Payment by Mail: By cheque or money order only, made payable to the Minister of Finance (see Where can you get ..., above).

Related Requirements:
If applying for a Class F certificate you must provide proof of successful completion of the PGAC100-1 training course.

If applying for a Class C, Class D or E certificate, a copy of your drivers' licence is needed.
Additional Information:
There are various classes of this certification, reflecting various degrees of competency:

(B) Bulk Plant Operator
(C) Cylinder Delivery Operator
(D) Tank Truck Operator
(E) Cargo Liner Operator
(F) Dispenser Operator
(G-1) Restricted to propane service and installation for RV and mobile homes
(G-2) Restricted to propane construction heaters and portable cylinders
(G-3) Restricted to propane-fired barbecue grills
(G-6) Restricted to service only of in-house propane and natural gas-fired appliances and equipment at the location designated on the certificate
(G-7) Restricted to conversion and servicing of systems where propane is used as a motor fuel to power off-road vehicles (not including highway-type vehicles)
(G-9) Gas Pipefitter  - For the installation of propane/natural gas piping from the supply to the last shut-off valve
