Trade Apprenticeship: Registration and Certificate of Qualification

Who Needs This Registration and Certificate?
  Anyone who wants an outward and visible symbol that they have reached a certain pre-determined level of competency in a designated occupation.

  1. In Nova Scotia, 61 occupations are designated trades for which Certificates of Qualification are administered by Labour and Workforce Development:, Apprenticeship Training and Skill Development Division . They are all listed under "Additional Information Part A" at the end of this entry.
  2. Nine of the Apprenticeship occupations (trades) require certification before one can legally work in those fields in Nova Scotia.
  3. There are additional occupations (trades) which also require some form of certification or licensing before one can legally work in those fields in Nova Scotia. These are administered by other Departments or Agencies, and are listed under "Additional Information Part B" at the end of this entry.

Application Forms & Process:
 
  1. For those trades administered by Labour and Workforce Development:, an application form and a detailed explanation of the process can be obtained from one of the Apprenticeship Training and Skill Development Division Offices listed above.  The forms are also available on Apprenticeship Training and Skill Development Division website.

    In some cases, the applicant will have to challenge an examination. When they have submitted their completed application, they will be notified by mail of the process regarding examinations, including the dates and locations of examinations sittings.

    If the application is approved and the applicant passes the examination, they will be notified and a certificate will be sent by mail.

  2. For those trades administered by other departments of the N.S. Government, see the entry in this directory for that specific licence or permit.

    Note; The information on waiting period, renewal, price, and related requirements given below apply only to the 61 apprenticeable trades administered by Labour and Workforce Development:.
Waiting Period:
 

15 business days for compulsory occupations and non-standardized applications within Canada

30 business days for non-compulsory occupations or international applications

10 business days for Apprenticeship Agreements with employers

Provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received.
 

Expiry & Renewal:
 
  1. For compulsory occupations, the certificate of qualification is valid for 5 years, and is renewable. The Department will send a renewal notice before the certificate expires.
  2. For non-compulsory occupations, the identification card is valid for 5 years. It is the responsibility of the holder to start the renewal process; no notice is sent by the Department.

Replacement Identification Card:  $13.16

Additional Invigilator:  $261.93
In-Class Technical Training:  $81.18 (no HST on training)
Internet Training:  $81.18 (no HST on training)

Trade Qualifier Application -(Section 30): :  $654.86
IP Holder from Other Jurisdictions:  $65.54

Note: Nova Scotia is a participant in the Interprovincial "Red Seal" Program which enhances the mobility of the certified trades people throughout Canada.

Part A: Trades administered by Labour and Workforce Development:

Of the 61 apprenticeable trades administered by this department, there are 9 which are called "compulsory". That means that one must have a Certificate of Qualification in order to legally work in this field in Nova Scotia.

The 9 compulsory occupations are:
  1. Bricklayer
  2. Construction Electrician
  3. Automotive Service Technician
  4. Automotive Service Technician (Service Station Mechanic)
  5. Plumber
  6. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
  7. Oil Burner Mechanic
  8. Truck and Transport Mechanic
  9. Sprinkler System Installer

Part B: Trades administered by Other Departments of the N.S. Government:

There are other occupations (trades) which also require some form of certification to practice in Nova Scotia. That means an applicant must take some training and / or pass some examinations before being certified to practice in the province. These certifications (often called "licences") are administered by a variety of departments and agencies and include:
  1. Milk Tank Truck Grader Certification and Apprentice Certification
