Special Constable and Provincial Civil Constable: Appointments

  Anyone in Nova Scotia who is not a police officer, but is required to enforce very specific laws.

Application Forms & Process:
  An application for any of these appointments can be obtained online from the Department of Justice (see above.)

In all cases, the photograph must accompany the applications. (Please see Related Requirements, below.)

If all requirements are met and the application is approved, the appointment will be sent to the applicant by mail.

Waiting Period:
  An original application shall be reviewed and a determination made within 10 business days after a complete application has been received. An application is considered complete when all materials necessary to make a determination on the application and all requested materials have been received.
Expiry & Renewal:
 

Provincial Civil Constable - expires 2 years from the date of issue, and can be renewed. The individual must contact this office for the renewal application before the expiry date.

Special Constable - expires 3 years from the date of issue.

Price & Payment:  (No tax is charged)
 

Initial Application and Renewal:

Provincial Civil Constable $25.00 fee

Special Constable n/a

All fees are non-refundable.

Please pay by cheque or money order payable to the "Minister of Finance"

Related Requirements:
 

Provincial Civil Constable

  • must be 19 years of age or older.
  • must be a British subject or Canadian citizen.
  • have no disqualifying criminal history
  • one current full-face photograph (1 x 1 1/18 in size) of the person for whom application for a license is made.
  • the fee prescribed must accompany the application.
  • two letters of reference.
  • security bond or personnel bond in the amount of $2,000.
  • such other information as may be required.

Special Constables

  • one current full-face photographs(1 x 1 1/18 in size) of the person for whom application for an appointment is made.
  • have no disqualifying criminal history
  • such other information as may be required.
  • within the metro area , the application must be first submitted to the Halifax Municipality, Parking Enforcement for approval before it is forwarded to this office.
  • outside the metro are, the application must be submitted to the local police agency for approval before it is forwarded to this office.
