Coal Gas Production Agreement (Onshore)

Who Needs This Approval?
Anyone who wants an exclusive right to produce coal gas (coalbed methane) for commercial purposes in Nova Scotia.

Note: This does not affect venting by operators of coal mines.

Application Forms & Process:

An application form (Form F, "Application for "Coal Gas Production Agreement") can be obtained from the Manager, Petroleum Resources, N.S. Department of Energy. When completed, it is submitted to the same office, along with the applicable fees.

A Development Program must be submitted and approved in the application process.

If all requirements are met, and the application is approved, the applicant will be notified in writing following a decision by the N.S. Minister of Energy.

Waiting Period:
Minimum 150 days, if lands not subject to a Coal Gas Exploration Agreement.
Expiry & Renewal:
This agreement is valid for a period not to exceed 10 years from the date it is issued. Renewal is automatic. The renewal process is started by the Department, which will send a renewal form to the agreement holder.
Price: (tax is included)
Rental of $0.13 per hectare per year.

  1. Underground Gas Storage Act, Statutes of Nova Scotia, 1970, Chapter 6, Section 14;

  2. Environmental Assessment Approval, N.S. Department of  Environment;

  3. Coal Gas Exploration Agreement, N.S. Department of Energy;

  4. Notification to other right holders may be required under the Petroleum Resources Act and the Mineral Resources Act.
