Coal Gas Exploration Agreement (Onshore)

Who Needs This Approval?
Anyone who wants an exclusive right to explore for Coal Gas (Coalbed Methane) on designated lands in Nova Scotia.

Application Forms & Process:

Coal Gas Exploration Agreements are issued following a competitive Call for applications. The Call must be open for a minimum of 60 days and is usually open longer

An application form (Form E, "Application for Coal Gas Exploration Agreement") can be obtained from the Manager, Petroleum Resources, N.S. Department of Energy.

When completed, it is submitted to the same office, along with the applicable fees.

Coal Gas Exploration Agreements may be issued for an initial term of up to 5 years and have had a work program which must be carried out if the agreement holder wishes to retain the lands.

If all requirements are met, and the application is approved, the applicant will be notified in writing following a decision by the N.S. Minister of Energy.

Waiting Period:
60 days, provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received.
Expiry & Renewal:
This agreement is valid for up to 5 years from the date it is issued. It may be renewed for another 5 years by the Minister. The renewal time is the date it expires.
Price: (tax is included)
Initial Application and Annual Renewal: $1089.11 plus rental of $0.13 per hectare per year
Related Requirements:
Notification may be required to other right holders under the Petroleum Resources Act and the Mineral Resources Act.
Additional Information:
Minimum acceptable work provisions are provided by the Department.
