Hydrocarbon Storage (Underground) Licence

Who Needs This Approval?
Anyone who wants to do all work necessary to establish that a geological formation may be suitable to develop storage caverns in Nova Scotia, and the suitability of each storage cavern for the economic storage of gas.

Application Forms & Process:

An application form can be obtained from the N.S. Department of Energy.

When completed, it is submitted (to the Registry of Mineral and Petroleum Titles (Registry) office), along with a fee of $40 per application.

If all requirements are met, and the application is approved, the applicant will be notified in writing.
Waiting Period:
90 days, provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received.
Expiry & Renewal:
This licence is valid for 1 year from the date it is issued. It is renewable for up to 4 renewals of 1 year each, and the renewal date is 1 year from the date it was first issued.
Price: (tax is included)
Initial Application and Annual Renewal: $106.80 per application and rentals of $2.67/ha.
Related Requirements:
  1. The landowner's written permission is required before entering his / her lands.

  2. Environmental Assessment Approval, N.S. Department of Environment.

  3. All work conducted persuant to this Licence must be done in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Environment Act, and all other pertinent legislation.
