Temporary Work Permit

Who Needs This Permit?
Anyone who wants to work in a compulsory certified trade who does not have a current certificate or qualification, or is not a registered apprentice or improver.

Note:  Of the 54 apprenticeable trades administered by this department, there are 9 which are called "compulsory".  That means that one must have a Certificate of Qualification in order to legally work in this field in Nova Scotia.  The 9 compulsory occupations are:
  1. Bricklayer
  2. Construction Electrician
  3. Automotive Service Technician
  4. Motor Vehicle Repair ("Service Station Mechanic")
  5. Plumber
  6. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
  7. Oil Burner Mechanic
  8. Truck and Transport Mechanic
  9. Sprinkler System Installer

Application Forms & Process:
An application form can be obtained from the Apprenticeship Training Division or any of the Regional Offices listed above.  The contact would be the Industrial Training and Certification Officer.
Waiting Period:
2 - 4 weeks, depending upon the specifics of the permit.
(This is a guideline, the actual time is usually less.)
Expiry & Renewal:
This permit is valid only for the time period specified on it, which can be for up to 90 days. Once it expires, it is invalid and you have to get a new one.

Related Requirements:
  1. Must produce a Certificate of Qualification from another jurisdication.

  2. Must apply under Section 19 of the Regulations.

  3. Must register as an apprentice or improver.

  4. Must have tangible proof of effort to acquire certification.
