Private Career College Registration

Who Needs This Registration?
Anyone who wants to operate a school or place where vocational, occupational or career training is provided to students for a fee.

Application Forms & Process:
An applicant should contact the Private Career Colleges office by phone and request a registration application. Once completed, this should be sent in for review. Further information and/or clarification will be requested in writing if required. Results will be given in writing. The Office will provide any assistance requested in this process.
Waiting Period:
4 to 6 weeks, provided that all the items that must accompany the application have been received.
Expiry & Renewal:
This registration is valid for up to 1 year, covering the period from April 1 of one year to March 31 of the next. It can be renewed; the Department will send a renewal form to the registration holder before the registration expires.

The renewal application must be accompanied by the applicable annual fee.
Price:  (No tax is charged)
Initial Application and Annual Renewal: $534.00

Program Registration Fee: $106.80 per program

There is also a security requirement. The amount of security must be decided upon in consultation with the Department.
Related Requirements:
A fire inspection must be carried out on any training facilities. This is done through the Labour and Workforce Development: Office of the Fire Marshal or the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service within the HRM.
Additional Information:
A) Schools which do not need this registration include:
  1. Degree-granting Universities;
  2. N.S. Community Colleges;
  3. Schools governed by the N.S. Education Act, or an Act of the Parliament of Canada;
  4. Schools operated by employers or groups of employers for employees or employee associations; or
  5. Occupational training offered by an organization, where the training or instruction is a part of professional development.

B) In Nova Scotia, fields in which private career training is offered include: business education, esthetics, information technology, massage therapy, multimedia, tourism, travel and truck driving. (For more information, contact the Department (See Where can you get...., above.)
 
C) Requirements of Private Career Colleges include the following:
  1. All programs and instructors related to the school must be approved by the Department.
  2. There must be a student contract.
  3. In some cases, a Health Inspection will be required.
  4. The Department will also request an up-to-date inventory of equipment.
  5. Changes and/or additions to the original registration must be approved by the Department prior to implementation, for example, new courses, course changes, new instructors, change of location, etc.
