Firearm Certification for Hunters |

Anyone who wants to hunt with a firearm in Nova Scotia.
One must be 12 years of age or older to get this certification.

New hunters wishing to hunt with a firearm must first attend both the Canadian
Firearms Safety Course and the Hunter Education Course before they will
be issued a Wildlife Resources Card showing they have Firearm Certification .
(Note: these two courses are usually delivered separately.)
- Part A: Canadian Firearms Safety Course: (This course is a prerequisite for part B) This part of the training
is now delivered through the N.S. Community College system .
The course provides approximately 9 hours of instruction in safe firearm handling,
and students take both a written and a practical test. Those who successfully
pass this course get a Canadian Firearm Safety Course Report (CAFC332E). [For

- Part B: Atlantic Provinces Hunter Education Course: (This part of the training
is now delivered by the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and
Hunters.
To take the course, you must
(1) be at least 12 years old, and
(2) have a Canadian Firearms Safety Course Test Certificate. (See #1 above).
Applications for this Hunter Education Course are available from the
Federation at (902) 477-8898, or any of the Local or Area Offices of
the Department of Natural Resources, or from http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/hunt/huntered.htm.
This course includes 7 to 8 hours of instruction in ecology and wildlife
management; hunter ethics; laws and regulations; survival skills; and
field techniques. Students take both a practical test and a written
test; the pass mark is 80%.

Your Wildlife Resources Card which shows your certification will be sent to you within 2-3 months, once you have successfully
completed both the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (Part A) and the Nova Scotia Hunter Education Course (Part B), in that order, and have met all the requirements.

The Wildlife Resource Card, displaying your Firearm
Certification is valid for five (5) years, and can be renewed.
