Application Forms & Process
NO APPLICATION FORM IS REQUIRED.  You simply ask for a Base Licence at your local Dept. of Natural Resources office, or from any authorized vendor.

The Process works like this:
(A) First, you need to buy a Wildlife Habitat Stamp . This "stamp," which is about the size of a credit card, has to have the following information on it:
  • Date of issue;
  • Name;
  • Wildlife Resource Card number;
  • Signature of the holder. [If that person is under 18, a parent or guardian will have to sign for them.]
(B) You then stick the stamp on the front cover of the current copy of the N.S. Hunting and Furharvesting licence and regulations book. As soon as you stick the stamp on the book, you have your "Base Licence."  Licence Book + Wildlife Habitat Stamp = Base Licence.

Note: Whenever you are hunting, you have to have this Base Licence with you. [And if you are walking in the woods with a gun during hunting season, you are presumed to be hunting!]

(C) For most types of hunting (for example, deer, moose, bear, small game, etc.), you will ALSO NEED to buy a special stamp for that kind of hunting .  Different types of hunting have different stamps.  For example, there is one small stamp for hunting antlered deer, another for antlerless deer, another for small game, and so forth.

Each hunting stamp has a separate price. [You can find the prices in this Directory by going to the section for that type of hunting, such as "Hunting Licence: Small Game..." or by looking in the Hunting and Furharvesting Summary of Regulations .]

(D) After you buy your hunting stamp, you stick it on the inside cover of your Base Licence - and turns it into a Hunting Licence. Base Licence + Hunting Stamp = Hunting Licence .

(E) If you want to do several different types of hunting, you buy several different stamps and stick them all on your Base Licence. [This way you don't have to fill out a whole batch of application forms for different licences, or carry a bunch of licences around with you. You have your one Base Licence - plus the various hunting stamps you decide to put on it.]
Waiting Period:
None.

Price: (No tax is charged)
Wildlife Habitat Stamp: $3.00

NOTE:  There is a separate fee for the hunting stamps, just like there used to be fees for different kinds of hunting licences also.

Expiry & Renewal:
This is a seasonal licence which expires on July 14 of each calendar year. Once it expires, it is invalid, and you must get a new one.

For information on seasons, limits and regulations, see the Nova Scotia Hunting and Furharvesting Summary of Regulations booklet, available on the Department of Natural Resources website. This booklet is available in August of each year, wherever you can buy licences or by contacting the Licensing Division office (see "Where Can You Get . . ." above).
