Meat Permit (Wildlife)

Who Needs This Permit?
Anyone who wants to:
  1. Keep the meat of deer, rabbit, pheasant or grouse (partridge) after April 30 (for example, someone who has a supply of deer meat in the freezer, and has not used it up by April 30);

  2. Receive, after April 30, more than 15 pounds of deer meat which they did not legally hunt themselves (for example, a deer has been road killed, or killed by another hunter);

  3. At any time of year, keep the meat of moose after it has been dressed / prepared for storage. Note: Anyone may possess up to 15 pounds of moose meat (legally taken) until July 31 of the year following the kill without this permit.

Any of the Local or Area Offices of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources.

Consult the Nova Scotia Hunting and Furharvesting Summary of Regulations (which is available both in printed form and on the Department of Natural Resources website.)

Application Forms & Process:
An application form can be obtained the Nova Scotia Hunting and Furharvesting Summary of Regulations booklet or from the nearest Local or Area Office of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources. When completed, it is submitted to the same office.

Expiry & Renewal:
This permit is valid for the dates specified on the permit. It is renewable.

Related Requirements:
  1. The meat must have been legally obtained.

  2. A hunting licence number may be required.
Additional Information:
  1. Any person who kills a deer in a hunt and wants to keep the deer meat must retain their Deer Hunting Licence . It must be stamped, signed and dated by a deer registration agent. For the person who killed the deer, this will serve as a valid permit for storing / keeping the meat until April 30 of the following year.

  2. From May 1 until the opening of the next deer season, it is illegal for any person to possess deer meat without a valid Meat Permit issued by the Department.

  3. A moose hunting licence and tags serve as a permit to transport a moose from where it was legally killed to the hunter's home or place where the meat will be prepared for storage. A Meat Permit for moose must then be obtained from your local Area office to legally keep the meat of moose at any residence.

  4. After July 31 of the year following the kill, any person who possesses moose meat must have a Meat Permit which has been renewed .

  5. Any person who kills a deer or moose legally may transfer up to 15 pounds (only) to one other household, where it may be stored without a Meat Permit until April 30 of the following year in the case of deer, and until July 31 in the case of moose.
