Any salesperson in Nova Scotia engaged in testing, fitting
and sales of hearing aids and accessories, irrespective of the method
of sale (direct or from a retail store).

Note: There are a number of steps, listed below, to be
completed before an application for this permit can be accepted.
You can get a form to apply for this permit by:
(1) downloading
a form from our website;
(2) visiting any Access
Nova Scotia Centre; or
(3) calling or writing the office
listed above.
Information you will need to fill out your application form:
- Your prospective employer's name, address and NS Registry
of Joint Stock Companies number.
- Details are required if you have
|
|
- ever been licensed under any federal or provincial statute
- had a licence refused, suspended or revoked
- been involved in a personal or corporate bankruptcy
- unpaid judgements outstanding
- been convicted of a offence under the law and not been pardoned
|
- Your employment history for the past three years.
|
You can get a Licensing Guide from any Access
Nova Scotia Centre or from the Business Licensing Section listed
above.
Applicants for this permit must:
(a) complete a 6-month apprenticeship under the supervision of a licensed
hearing aid dealer, and provide written confirmation of that apprenticeship
from the person who provided the training.
(b) successfully write the International Licensing Exam (ILE);
Note: Although it is not required, a candidate may wish
to undertake the Institute of Hearing Instrument Studies Correspondence
Course, and take the course examination, in preparation for taking the
ILE. Information on the course is available from the office listed
above.
(c) take a practical (live subject) exam supervised by the N.S. Hearing
and Speech Clinic.
Note: you cannot take the practical exam until you have
passed the written exam.
Only after all those steps have been completed will an application
for this Permit be accepted.
The application form must be signed by an official of the company
for whom the applicant will be selling, and then submitted to the Department,
along with the applicable fee (see Price below).
Note: Anyone who has a master's degree in audiology
and has Canadian Association of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists
(CASLPA) Certification in Audiology is exempt from the above noted training
requirements, provided that they can verify both their degree and certificate,
and pay the appropriate fee.
If all requirements are met and the application is approved, the permit
will be mailed to the applicant.

| Waiting Period: |

|
The permit is normally processed within 2 to 3 weeks, once
all the items which must accompany the application have been received,
and all requirements are met.
(Please allow several extra days for mail delivery.)

| Expiry & Renewal: |
|
|
This permit will be valid until the expiry date of the permit
held by the sponsoring company. It can be renewed, the Department
will send a renewal notice, but it is NOT sent to the individual permit
holder. Instead, it is included in the notice which is sent to the licensed
company for whom the individual works.

Permit: $46.26 per year
NOTE: The permit that is granted to a salesperson expires at the same
time as the business licence granted to the sponsoring company in the
first year of licensing. This means that an initial licence may be granted
for a period of less than one year. The fee is pro-rated quarterly within
the licensing year of each company. It will be necessary to contact
the Licensing Section to determine the fee amount.
When you send in an application form, payment is by cheque or money
order made out to the Minister of Finance. No credit or debit cards
are accepted at this time.

Who is regulated under the Direct Sellers' Regulation Act?
Companies and individuals engaged in testing, fitting, and sales of hearing
aids, irrespective of the method of sale or the dollar amount.
What is regulated?
(1) All sales of hearing aids irrespective of the circumstances of the
sale (does not have to be a direct sale).
(2) The minimum educational / training standards of individuals selling
hearing aids.
(3) The contents of contracts.
