Development Permit

Who Needs This Permit?
 

Required for the construction, alteration, or change of use of any building, structure, or lot, for example, commencing a business on a premises.  A Development Permit is issued when it is determined that the proposed use of land and buildings complies with all requirements of the Land Use Bylaw.

These include type of use (i.e. commercial, industrial), adequacy of site (building setbacks, yard requirements), parking requirements, screening from abutting uses, and outdoor storage areas.

Application Forms & Process:
  A Development Permit Application may be obtained from the Development Office, Municipality of Yarmouth. When application is received the Development Officer must inform the applicant whether or not the application is complete within 15 days.

When a complete application is received by the Development Officer he must grant the permit or inform the applicant of reasons for not granting the permit within thirty days.

Expiry & Renewal:
  This permit is valid for 1 year from its date of issue. It can be renewed.
Related Requirements:
  In some instances, Building Near a Highway and Access to Property Permit, Residential or Commercial, from Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, Subdivision Approval, Municipality of Yarmouth, On Site Sewage Disposal Department of Environment and Labour (suitability for installation of on-site septic system) and other additional permits and approvals may be required.
