Anyone who wants to erect, construct, add to,
alter, replace, relocate or demolish any building or part of a building
or structure within the Municipality of the District of Shelburne.

| Application Forms & Process: |
|
A completed application is to be submitted accompanied
by construction drawings for all new construction and most renovations.
You should also include: plot plan showing distances to any property line,
buildings, etc. Also appropriate design drawings and specifications where
required. Permit fees should accompany all applications. A municipal Waste
Information Sheet must be filled out with every permit application.

The permit is normally issued within 1 to 4 weeks (depending on the complexity
of the proposal), once all items, such as the building plans, specifications,
and other applicable permits, which must accompany the application have
been received, and all requirements are met.

| Expiry & Renewal: |
|
This permit is valid for 12 months from the date
it is issued. It can be renewed each year for $5.00.

| Related Requirements: |
|
Some or all of the following permits or approvals may be
required before this permit can be issued:
- Building Permits cannot be issued in zoned areas within the Town until
a Development Permit has been first issued.
- If the property is registered as a Town
Heritage Property, no demolition or substantial alteration in the
exterior appearance may be undertaken unless permission is given by
the Town Heritage Advisory Committee.
- The Town Public Works Department must approve sewer connections and
driveway locations.

If you are not connecting to a sewer system, you
may need approval for the installation of an Sewage
Disposal system [or septic tank] from the Nova Scotia Environment.
- New buildings and major renovations may require that the builder
obtain Building Plans Approval (Office of the Fire Marshal, Nova Scotia Labour and Advanced Education)
. This approval is not required for
1 or 2 unit family dwellings, or private accessory (storage) buildings.
- Municipal Fire Safety Inspection
- Electrical Wiring Permit, Nova Scotia Labour and Advanced Education
- If you want to erect a structure within 100 metres of the centerline
of a public highway, or if you want to create a new access to a property
from a public highway, you will need to get a Building
Near a Highway and Access to Property Permit from the N.S. Department
of Transportation.
- Any form of Eating Establishment requires a Food
Establishment Permit from the N.S. Department of Agriculture &
Fisheries (Food Safety Division)
