Development Permit

Who Needs This Permit?
  Anyone who wants to erect, construct, alter, replace, relocate or add to any structure (including advertising signs) and anyone who wants to make any change or alteration in the use made of land or structures in Brooklyn, Liverpool or Milton, Queens County.

Note: A Development Permit must be issued prior to the start of any construction, change of use of any property, building, structure, or placement of signage.

Application Forms & Process:
  You can get an application form from the office listed above. Complete the form, and supply the Region with the necessary documents required for the project applied for. The application fee must accompany this form (see Price, below).
 
Waiting Period:
  Provincial Legislation sets out that within 30 days of receiving a completed application for a development permit, the development officer shall grant the development permit or inform the applicant of the reason for not granting the permit. However, turnaround time is usually 3 to 5 days.
 
Expiry & Renewal:
  This permit is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued.

Related Requirements:
  The following permits or approvals may be required before a Development Permit can be issued:
  1. Subdivision Approval (if applicable)
     
  2. Under certain circumstances, application and approval of a variance in the requirements of the land use bylaw may be necessary prior to the issuance of a development permit.
     
Additional Information:
  Building permits can not be issued in zoned areas until a development permit is first issued.  Brooklyn, Milton and Liverpool are all regulated by the Land Use Bylaw
