Who Needs This Permit?
  Anyone who wants to erect, construct, add to, alter, replace or relocate any building or any part of a building or structure, or change the use of any building or structure, or demolish a building or structure or part thereof within the Town of Parrsboro.

Application Forms & Process:
 

You can get an application form by visiting the Parrsboro Town Hall or you can have one mailed to you, by calling or writing the Town of Parrsboro.

Please submit the completed application, along with the applicable fee, to the Building Inspector, at the address listed above. The following items must accompany the application form: On-Site Sewage Disposal System Permit from Environment and Labour (if needed), deeds, survey plans (if needed) and the Building Plans Approval, from the Office of the Fire Marshal, Nova Scotia Environment and Labour. Please see Related Requirements, below.

If the application is approved, you will be notified by phone or you can inquire, in person, at the Parrsboro Town Hall.
 

Waiting Period:
  The initial application or the renewal of this Permit is normally processed within 7 business days, once all items which must accompany the application have been received, and all requirements are met.
 
Expiry:
  The Permit is valid for 1 year from the date it is issued. It can be renewed. It is the responsibility of the Permit holder to contact the Municipality before it expires; NO NOTICE of renewal will be sent out by the Municipality.
 
Price & Payment:  (No tax is charged)
 

Initial Application: depends on the type of structure
1% per $1,000 estimated cost of construction + $5.00 for alterations and renovations
$0.02/sq.ft. for new residential garages + $5.00
$0.06/sq.ft. for new residential construction + $5.00
$0.10/sq.ft. for new commercial construction + $5.00
$20.00 for demolition permit

Renewal: $5.00

Payment at counter: Please pay by cash or cheque, made out to the Town of Parrsboro.

Payment by mail: Please pay by cheque made out to the Town of Parrsboro.
 

Related Requirements:
 

Some or all of the following permits or approvals may be required before this permit can be issued:

  1. Building Permits cannot be issued in zoned areas within the Town until a Development Permit, Town of Parrsboro, has been first issued.
     
  2. If you are not connecting to a sewer system, you may need approval for the installation of an Sewage Disposal system [or septic tank] from the Nova Scotia Environment and Labour.
     

  3. New buildings and major renovations require that the builder obtain Building Plans Approval (Office of the Provincial Fire Marshal, Nova Scotia Environment and Labour). This approval is not required for 1 or 2 unit family dwellings, or private accessory (storage) buildings.

  4. Municipal Fire Safety Inspection

  5. Electrical Wiring Permit, Nova Scotia Environment and Labour
     
  6. If you want to erect a structure within 100 metres of the centerline of a public highway, or if you want to create a new access to a property from a public highway, you will need to get a Building Near a Highway and Access to Property Permit from the N.S. Department of Transportation.
     
  7. Any form of Eating Establishment requires a Food Establishment Permit from the N.S. Department of Agriculture & Fisheries (Food Safety Division)
