Occupancy Permit

Who Needs This Permit?
  Anyone who wishes to occupy a building, or portion of a building, that has undergone construction or renovations, since April 1, 1987. Also, after there is a change in the class of occupancy from one group of classification to another. With this change of occupancy, sometimes it may also be necessary to upgrade the affected building or portion thereof

Application Forms & Process:
 

This Permit is obtained by requesting an inspection of the construction, (Inspection 5.1c of the Building Code Regulations). The Permit will be issued when the construction meets the requirements of the National Building Code, as it relates to safety.
 

Waiting Period:
 

The Building Inspector will carry out the inspection, and will notify the applicant within 3 to 5 days after the inspection is complete.
 

Price:
 

There is no fee for an Occupancy Permit. Also, no bond or deposit required as a condition of application or approval.
 

Expiry & Renewal:
 

None
 

Related Requirements:
  Final approval of the on-site sewage disposal system by Environment and Labour is required, if the building is located on a lot with its own sewage disposal system.
