Occupancy Permit

Who Needs This Permit?
Anyone who wants to occupy a building or a portion of a building, or change the class of occupancy of a building or any portion of a building.

The major classes of occupancy are: (1) Group "A" Assembly, (2) Group "B" Institutional, (3) Group "C" Residential, (4) Group "D" Personal Service,

(5) Group "E" Mercantile, (6) Group "F" Industrial Division 1.2 or 3.

Application Forms & Process:
When applying for an Occupancy Permit, the owner or representative must complete an application form. You can get an application form at the Town Office. Complete the form, and submit it, along with the appropriate fee and all required information to the Building Inspector.

In some cases, either a Building Permit or a Development Permit may be required before the Occupancy Permit can be issued. A Building Inspection is required. If any construction upgrading is required, that will have to be completed before the permit can be issued.

Failure to comply with all requirements could slow the Occupancy Permit approval process.

Applicants will be notified by phone or by mail when a decision has been made.
 

Waiting Period:
Up to 1 week, if no construction upgrading is required
 
Expiry & Renewal:
This permit remains valid until there is a change in the class of occupancy or until additions or major renovations take place.
 
Price & Payment:

$ 20 No deposit or bond is required.

Payment is by cash, cheque or money order make out to the Town of Lunenburg.
 

Related Requirements:
The following permits or approvals may be required before this permit can be issued:
  1. A Building Permitor a Development Permitmay be required before this permit can be issued.
     
  2. Approvals may be needed from the Municipal Public Works Department, and/or from the local Electric Utility.
     
Additional Information:
Any change from a given group to another group requires a new occupancy permit and may require building upgrading.
