Demolition Permit

Who Needs This Permit?
 

Anyone who wishes to demolish a building or part of a building within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

Note: This permit is not required for accessory buildings smaller than 10' x 10' [ten feet by ten feet

Application Forms & Process:
 

You can apply for this permit at the office listed above. You do not have to apply in person; someone may apply on your behalf, provided that they have a signed document from the owner giving them authority to do that.

When you apply, you must provide the following information:

  1. the correct civic address of the building;
  2. owner's name;
  3. contractor's name;
  4. height of the building to be demolished;
  5. start date and finish date of the demolition;
  6. the disposal area of the building being demolished; and
  7. a copy of your safety plan - Occupational Health & Safety

You must also indicate:

  1. if any streets or sidewalks will need to be closed; and
  2. if any barricades will be needed and, if so, what kind of barricades.

You must pay the appropriate fee when you apply (see Price & Payment, below).

After all required information and approvals, and the appropriate fees have been submitted, and the application has been reviewed by staff, the applicant will be notified by mail.

Waiting Period:
  Same-day to one day for approval..
Expiry:
  This permit is valid only for the period from the start date and the finish date stated in the application .
Price & Payment:  (No tax is charged)

Related Requirements:
  In some situations, approvals by the Traffic Authority, Municipal Public Works Department, N.S. Department of Transportation and possibly the local Electric Utility may be required.
Additional Information:
 
  1. All demolition shall be carried out in a manner to provide reasonable safety to persons and property.

  2. If the demolition is to occur at or near the street or highway right-of-way, the local Traffic Authority and the Municipal Public Works, or N.S. Department of Transportation, must be notified.

  3. No exemptions from Provincial / Federal Regulations are allowed
