Building Permit

Who Needs This Permit?
Anyone who wants to erect, construct, add to, alter, or change the use or class of occupancy, or replace or relocate any building or part of a building or structure within the Town of Bridgewater. Note: 

Note: The purpose of these permits is to determine compliance with Building Code Bylaw of Town of Bridgewater, as enforced under direction of the Building Inspector, in order to enhance quality of construction, with particular emphasis on safety issues.

Application Forms & Process:
When applying for a Building Permit, an application form must be completed by the contractor (builder) or the owner. Complete the form, and submit it to the Building Inspector, along with the appropriate fee and all required information. Construction drawings are required for all new construction and most renovations. 

In most cases, a Development Permit is required before a Building Permit can be issued. 

Applicants will be notified by phone or by mail when a decision is made.

Waiting Period:
Usually within 10 business days after the day you apply.
Expiry & Renewal:
This permit is valid for 1 year from the date it is issued. It can be renewed.
Note: the application expires in 6 months if the application is not completed.
Price & Payment:
0.21% of the estimated value of the proposed construction or $10.00 whichever is the greater.

Payment is by cash, cheque or money order made out to the Town of Bridgewater.

Related Requirements:
Some or all of the following permits or approvals may be required before this permit can be issued:
  1. You must have a Development Permit approved and issued by the Town of Bridgewater (Development Officer) before this permit can be issued.

  2. If you are not connecting to a sewer system, you may need approval for the installation of an Sewage Disposal system [or septic tank] from the Nova Scotia Environment and Labour.

  3. Some new buildings and major renovations require that the builder obtain Building Plans Approval (Office of the Provincial Fire Marshal, Nova Scotia Environment and Labour). This approval is not required for 1 or 2 unit family dwellings, or private accessory (storage) buildings.

  4. Any form of Eating Establishment requires a Food Establishment Permit from the N.S. Department of Agriculture & Fisheries (Food Safety Division).

  5. Municipal Fire Safety Inspection

  6. Electrical Wiring Permit, Nova Scotia Environment and Labour

  7. Building Near a Highway and Access to Property Permit: Residential and Commercial , Nova Scotia Environment and Labour

  2. All Building Development and Occupancy Permits are filed according to civic address only. At present, no cross-referencing pertaining to individuals is utilized.
     
  3. All information is retained in civic files.
