| Who Needs This Permit? |
|
Anyone who wants to erect, construct, add to, alter, or change the use or class of occupancy, or replace or relocate any building or part of a building or structure (except for exemptions) within the County of Antigonish, including mobile homes.
Note: The purpose of this permit is to determine compliance with the
Nova Scotia Building Code regulations, as enforced under direction of
the Building Official, in order to enhance quality of construction, with
particular emphasis on safety/health issues. |

| Application Forms & Process: |
|
When applying for a Building Permit,
an application
form must be completed and signed by the contractor (builder) or the
owner. Complete the form, and submit it to the Building Official, along
with all required information. Construction drawings are required for all
new construction and most renovations.
Note: Inadequately submitted information/drawings may result in permit
process delays.
Applicants will be notified by phone or by mail when a decision is made. |

Usually within 10 business days
after the day you apply. |
| Expiry & Renewal: |
|
This permit is valid for 1 year
from the date it is issued. It can be renewed should construction not be
completed within the year.
Note: the application expires in 6 months if the application is not
completed. |
| Price & Payment: |
|
Fees are due when the permit is
issued. The permit
fee schedule is subject to change from time to time. Consult with the
Building Official when submitting your application.
Payment can be made by cash, debit, credit card, cheque or money order
made payable to the Municipality of the County of Antigonish. |
| Related Requirements: |
|
Some or all of the following permits
or approvals may be required before the Building Permit can be issued:
- Where there is a Land-use Bylaw in effect, you must have a Development
Permit approved and issued by the Municipality of the County of Antigonish
(Development Officer) before the Building Permit can be issued.
- If you are connecting to a municipal sewer system, you will require
a municipal Sewer Connection Permit from the
Municipality of the County of Antigonish, If you are not connecting
to a municipal sewer system, you may need approval for the installation
of an On-site
Sewage Disposal system from Nova Scotia Environment.
- Municipal Fire Safety Inspection
- Driveway access to a provincially-owned road or highway will require
an access permit
from the N.S. Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.
- New electrical installation or modifications to existing electrical
installation, or instalation of communications cables in non-residential
applications (or where the residence exceeds four units) will require
and Electrical Wiring Permit, Nova Scotia Labour and Advanced Education
- New buildings and major renovations may require that the builder
obtain Building Plans Approval (Office of the Fire Marshal, Nova Scotia Labour and Advanced Education)

- Building
Near a Highway and Access to Property Permit: Residential and Commercial
, Nova Scotia Environment and Labour
- Any form of Eating Establishment requires a
Food Establishment Permit from the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture
& Fisheries (Food Safety Division).
