Nova Scotia Transit Research Incentive Program

The Nova Scotia Transit Research Incentive Program (NS-TRIP) provides funding to support capacity building initiatives intended to generate new and improved public transit services in rural and unserviced urban areas of Nova Scotia.

Eligible applicants can apply for up to 75 per cent of the total eligible costs, to a maximum grant of $50,000 per project. Applicants can receive funding for one project per year under the program.

The funding will be used to support a broad range of activities, all of which must be directly related to enhancing the service capacity of new or existing public transit organizations in Nova Scotia.

  • municipalities (for unserviced areas only);
  • public transit services owned by a municipality or a corporate entity on behalf of a municipality (privately owned services are not eligible); and
  • incorporated associations representing public transit service operators in Nova Scotia

Eligible Projects Include:

  • research and planning required in advance of new services (e.g., transit business planning, transit strategy development, transit marketing study, and needs assessments);
  • one time only service start-up funding (including fixed and variable costs);
  • monitoring and evaluation; (e.g., client satisfaction surveys);
  • building partnerships and strategic alliances (e.g., modal split analysis);
  • conferences and workshops (cost of sponsorship only);
  • policy development and implementation to enhance existing services (e.g., life cycle assessment, transit demand management);
  • one time only grant for pilot or demonstration projects (including projects designed to increase modal shift to public transit); and
  • training of staff or board members (e.g, accessibility training, strategic planning and governance studies).
