Nova Scotia Topographic Database - More Information

NOVA SCOTIA TOPOGRAPHIC DATABASE PRODUCTS
1:1000, 1:2000, 1:5000, 1:10 000, 1:50 000

The NSTDB consists of the following data:

Topographic
Commonly referred to as the "map base", this is a 3D dataset, which includes the following nine standard feature code groupings: building, designated areas, delimiters, roads & railroads, land cover, hypsography, structures, utilities, and hydrography.

Contours
Contours display the characteristics of the terrain relief. The contour interval varies depending on the mapping scale. For example, 1:2000 scale mapping has a contour interval of 2 metres and 1:10 000 mapping has a contour interval of 5 metres.

Digital Elevation Model (DEM)
The DEM is an ASCII point file which contains x, y, and z coordinate data. Each window contains data collected every 2mm at the aerial photography scale. This results in 20 metre or 36 metre spacing for 1:2000 mapping, 36 metre spacing for 1:5000 mapping, and 80 metre spacing for 1:10 000 mapping. For terrain modeling applications, the DEM file should be used along with the corresponding 3D topographic breakline features in the topographic file.
