Frequently Asked Questions - Property Online
1. What is Property Online?

Property Online is an Internet browser application that provides online access to land-ownership and related information collected through the Province's Land Information Centres, Registries of Deeds and other sources. The Property Online database contains ownership information, including property maps for the entire Province, and is available to subscribers.

2. Who should use Property Online?

Any person or enterprise that regularly uses land-ownership information and related property information will find Property Online beneficial. This includes organizations such as provincial/federal government agencies, municipalities, surveying and engineering firms, real estate companies, financial institutions, law firms, consulting firms, and resource-based industries. Lawyers and surveyors who intend to work in the land registration system are required to subscribe to Property Online.

3. What are the benefits of subscribing to Property Online?

The information contained in Property Online, which can be accessed from any desktop computer with access to the Internet, can be searched by Parcel Identification Number (PID), owner name, assessment account number, civic address, and geographic location (e.g. city, county). As well, the service can be used to create and print customized maps. This service provides links to other property information such as the Grantor Grantee Index, and outstanding municipal tax balances for participating municipalities.

4. How is Property Online updated?

Property Online is updated from a variety of sources by highly trained and skilled Property Mappers and Geographic Information Technicians. The principal sources are the Registry of Deeds and Land Information offices. All registered documents affecting ownership interests in property are used to update the service. Document references are applied to the Parcel Identification Number (PID) creating a "parcel based " index to the documents. Assessment Accounts are also linked to the PID during property transactions. Survey plans and approved subdivision plans filed at the Registry of Deeds and Land Information offices are the main source of change to the size and/or shape of a parcel. Relationships between the PID and the Assessment Account number are established during the subdivision process, as well as relationships between the parent and infant parcels.

Property owners and other users of the service provide invaluable feedback which is an important element in the ongoing maintenance and improvement of our database.

5. How current is the information in the Property Online service?

The service is updated as frequently as possible. It is important to understand that the flow of information from the source of the actual property transactions across the Province to update the service involves several steps. The currency of each of the Counties can vary as well.

6. Are there restrictions on the use of the data contained within Property Online?

In order to gain access to Property Online, you must sign a Property Online user agreement with Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (SNSMR). Section 4.0 of that agreement covers Restrictions on Use. All users of the service should be familiar with the terms of the agreement.

7. How do I subscribe to Property Online?

To subscribe to Property Online you must sign a Property Online user agreement with SNSMR. You will need a computer with Internet access and a web browser such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Hardware and Software requirements for accessing Property Online are available at www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/property/registry/.

8. How do I provide feedback about the Property Online Service?

Feedback from the users of Property Online is invaluable to the maintenance and overall improvement of our database and service. We encourage our users to provide feedback using the online feedback form. Information provided to us through the Internet Application will be forwarded to the appropriate Regional office to be investigated.
