Municipal and School Board Elections - Leave of Absence

Potential candidates should check for their employer policies (including those addressing political activities) and legislative requirements that apply to them if they enter a municipal election as a candidate. Examples of such requirements include:

  • Municipal employees are required to obtain a leave of absence (Municipal Elections Act, s. 17C);
  • NS Provincial Employees are required to comply with provisions in the Civil Service Act and the Civil Service Collective Bargaining Act and any policies respecting political activities;
  • Federal employees are required to comply with provisions of the Public Service Employment Act and policies relating to political activity.

Please note this list is not exhaustive or complete. It is the individual responsibility of the candidate to make himself or herself aware of any restrictions or requirements and to comply with them.
