Description of Employer's Business: Aventis Pasteur is Canada’s largest and oldest vaccine company. Formerly Connaught Laboratories, Aventis Pasteur has been partnering with public health in this country since 1914 to control and eliminate infectious disease through immunization. Pentacel™, the company’s paediatric combination vaccine which protects children against five diseases in a single injection, was researched, devoloped and is manufactured in Canada. Pentacel contains an accellular pertussis vaccine that is the global “gold standard.” Aventis Pasteur manufactures and distibutes 30 vaccines and immotherapeutic products which protect against 17 infectious diseases and common illnesses.
As this country’s only full-scale vaccine facility, Aventis Pasteur is committed to researching, developing and manufacturing vaccines in Canada. The company invests almost 40 cents of every sales dollar in Canadian R&D. In 2001, that investment was $83 million. In 2002, over $90 million will be invested in Canada. Aventis Pasteur is also a leader in the Canadian biotechnology industry, and played a key role organizing Bio2002, held in Toronto in June. The Aventis Biotech Challenge, a science competition designed to get high school students interested in science careers, in now held annually in 12 Canadian cities, including Halifax.
