Age-friendly Communities Grant

The Age-Friendly Communities Grant program provides funding for projects that help older Nova Scotians stay active, healthy and engaged in their communities.

The program provides funding for community-wide efforts to create age-friendly environments, promote healthy aging and support initiatives that help lead to positive impacts in the lives of older adults in Nova Scotia.

The grant provides funding of up to $25,000 per initiative and is administered by the Department of Seniors and Long-term Care.

Funding opportunities

The grant has 2 funding streams: planning and projects.

Planning stream

The planning stream supports collaborative efforts to examine the needs and priorities in communities to support aging Nova Scotians. This includes local government, community organizations and older adults themselves. Initiatives in this stream must be in partnership with local government and include consultation and engagement of older adults and stakeholders in the community.

Planning initiatives funded may focus on:

  • understanding local community needs, current resources and gaps related to aging (this information can help inform future areas of focus for new or existing community programs and services)
  • developing solutions with the community to address the persistent challenges of supporting older adults in their homes

Projects stream

The projects stream supports projects that help older Nova Scotians stay active, healthy and engaged in their communities. Projects need to help older adults be socially connected, support quality of life and create diverse and engaged communities.

Projects funded may focus on:

  • physical activity, mobility and nutrition
  • reducing social isolation and strengthening social connections
  • providing non-medical support at home or in the community
  • helping improve digital skills

See the grant guidelines for project examples.

Funding is available for up to $25,000 for each initiative.

Requests for the maximum contribution of $25,000 must involve a large-scale, in-depth initiative or provincial initiative.
