Managing Organizational Change

All organizations go through periods of change and the Nova Scotia Government is no different. Leaders of change should develop specific strategies for dealing with the psychological impact of change (referred to as "transition" in the Bridges Model) on their employees and other stakeholders.

This tool kit has been developed to help leaders of change manage the transitions. The kit includes a half-day workshop Portable Document Format (PDF) that introduces the Bridges Model, transition activities Portable Document Format (PDF) and a change management checklist Portable Document Format (PDF) for each of the stages of transition.

One way to deal with the psychological impact of change is to create a transition team. This team will brainstorm Portable Document Format (PDF) all possible impacts of the change and work to find solutions for addressing the impacts. To create a transition team, choose representatives from all levels of the organization/team/unit who are affected by the proposed change. Then follow the diagram Portable Document Format (PDF) to work through the transition team process.

Another way to create momentum for change is to follow Beckhard's Model of Change Portable Document Format (PDF). Beckhard believes that reducing resistance to change hinges on increasing dissatisfaction with the status quo, sharing a compelling vision and providing first steps to get the change off the ground.
