Interested Applicant SectionWhat this is:The Nova Scotia Public Service Commission strives to create a workforce that is reflective of the diverse community it serves and to provide a respectful and inclusive workplace. The Diversity Talent Pool (DTP) consists of resumes of pre-screened, qualified candidates within the designated groups (women in under-represented or non-traditional roles, Aboriginals, African Nova Scotians and other Racially Visible Persons and Persons with Disabilities) who are seeking casual or temporary positions with the Government of Nova Scotia. In turn, these short-term placements provide members of the DTP with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and upgrade their skills. “The Diversity Unit staff extends themselves to ensure that members’ needs are met and that their skill sets are matched appropriately with upcoming positions. I have also found the staff to be cognizant of future positions that may be beneficial to members who are underemployed or looking to grow and gain new skills and experiences.” The Program goals are:
Kinds of positions:Bargaining Unit Casual: these are unionized positions that last 10 weeks or less. Casual employees are paid hourly wages and are not entitled to pension, benefits or vacation. Bargaining Unit Temporary: these are unionized position that extends beyond 10 weeks to a maximum of 39 weeks. Employees are paid hourly rates plus some benefits. Excluded Casual or Temporary positions are non-unionized positions and could range from 2 weeks to a maximum of a year. How do I become a member of the DTP?1st Step: ApplicationCasual rosters asking for applications will be regularly posted on career beacon. You need to apply with a resume and cover letter that clearly highlights your relevant skills, experience and qualifications. You must self identify as belonging to one of the four designated groups to be considered. 2nd Step: TestingAll qualified applicants will be tested. Testing comprises of computer software applications such as, spreadsheet, word processing and presentation, Grammar and spelling and in some cases writing and data analysis skills will also be tested. 3rd Step: InterviewAll Candidates who successfully pass their tests will be interviewed. Interviews are mostly behavioral and will have a three- person panel. The panel will comprise of at least one HR person, and two other staff or employees. The Public Service Commission will strive to have representation on the panel. 4th Step: Reference ChecksWhen you pass the interview, you will be subject to at least three reference checks. 5th Step: Job ReferralAll successful applicants are then registered in the database and resumes will be referred to hiring managers for positions you qualify for.
