Remarks for Premier Rodney MacDonald
East Richmond Education Centre Event
St. Peter's, Nova Scotia
Thursday 26 April 2007

Good day. I am with you today because I have good news for Cape Breton; good news for the people of East Richmond; and good news for this school.

When the school review consultations took place last fall, people like yourselves told us that rural schools are cornerstones in the community: They are places where the community comes together to learn, to discuss, and to celebrate.

During my last visit here to your school, I was impressed with the commitment of the Strait school board, principal Chuck Boudreau, parents and students — a commitment to education. Each and every day, you are working to make this a better environment.

I said I would be back, and here I am.

Today, I am pleased to announce that my government is investing $4.5 million for renovations to the East Richmond Education Centre, of which $1.5 million dollars will flow in this fiscal year.

By the time the paint dries, you will see many significant changes in this school. The first step will be to expand the gymnasium and the cafeteria. They will be substantially larger than they are now.

There will also be upgrades in the classrooms; there will be new technology, and new whiteboards. As well, we will start work for a new wing of classrooms.

There is good news elsewhere on our island, too. In Sydney, they are learning that two important projects – the Northside and Glace Bay schools – will see progress this year.

Sydney Academy and Riverview Rural High will also benefit, and SAERC in Port Hawkesbury will benefit, too. Progress will continue at École N-D-A in Cheticamp.

The good news, however, is not confined to this side of the causeway. As I am sharing this good news with you, Education Minister Karen Casey is visiting schools in the Annapolis Valley and sharing similar good news with their school board, their schools and their students.

We're building and renovating schools to provide students with a safe and healthy learning environment. We remain committed to all the projects which have been approved to date.

Building and renovating schools reflects our commitment to create winning conditions that will help us achieve future prosperity. We are providing public school students with the education they will need to move on to college, university or the workforce.

At the same time, we are building for individuals, families and communities – improving institutions like schools that are the heart of a community.

My Cabinet and I will continue to work for Cape Breton, and for all of Nova Scotia every hour of every day.

Thank you.
