Techportjobs.com Launch
Cape Breton University
March 2, 2007

Good afternoon. It's great to be here at Cape Breton University (CBU), a post-secondary institution with a unique academic tradition that meets the demands of the real world. So, it's fitting that we are here for today's announcement.

Technology is increasingly driving our world economy, and technology is used in every industry across our province. It is everywhere: Think about the courses and the computer labs here at CBU.

There are other examples where technology is less obvious, but it is still vital. On your drive in this morning, some of you likely passed by a fire station. The fire service in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) has an Internet-based software system that helps dispatchers get trucks to the right addresses, and the system even helps track when fire trucks need maintenance.

Diagnostic technology is used at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and at health-care facilities throughout the province. People here in Sydney are doing computer animation and marketing work at Virtual Media Productions Ltd., and we also have people doing advanced software at local companies like AG Research.

Each and every day, Nova Scotians are doing their jobs and, more and more, IT is a key part of their work. In fact, employers throughout the province are growing and they need more people with IT skills to sustain that growth.

We are projecting at least 2,500 job openings in three years for people with IT skills. That's why I am pleased to officially launch www.techportjobs.com—Nova Scotia’s dedicated IT job site.

This website will link IT graduates and expatriates with the new and exciting job opportunities in all regions of our great province. It's also free to use for companies of all sizes in any part of Nova Scotia. These employers will have equal access to the high-calibre job seekers.

We are truly on the road to building the New Nova Scotia, a place where we will seize new opportunities as a leader in technology. We have already begun the work to make Nova Scotia the most broadband-connected place in North America. Today's announcement is another step forward.

Thank you everyone, and let me acknowledge the great collaboration between the Information Technology Industry Alliance of Nova Scotia (ITANS), our people at Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI), businesses and many others to develop www.techportjobs.com.

We are showing that Nova Scotia is putting its weight behind IT and our businesses. We've already proven in the KPMG business rankings that Nova Scotia is a top competitor, and we will develop tools that help Nova Scotia businesses continue to attract the best people as we build the New Nova Scotia.
