The Red Spruce

The Red Spruce

  • The red spruce was declared Nova Scotia's official tree in 1988.
  • It has many remarkable traits, including the ability to thrive in a variety of places, from bogs to rocky, shallow soils.
  • In some sites it can grow to more than 30 metres tall, though its average height is 25 metres.
  • The red spruce can survive for decades in deep shade and can thrive for centuries after a forest has been thinned.
  • A red spruce can live as long as 400 years.
  • It is the number one lumber product for sawing in the province, and the second best product for pulpwood.
