The Nova Scotia Legislature


The Nova Scotia Legislature is made up of the Lieutenant-Governor and the House of Assembly. The Lieutenant-Governor represents the Queen and is appointed by Canada’s Governor General.

The House of Assembly is made up of 52 elected men and women, representing the people of Nova Scotia. Members of the House of Assembly are responsible for passing provincial laws.

Nova Scotia Government


The government of Nova Scotia is formed by the party that has the most members after an election. The leader of the party with the most members becomes the Premier of Nova Scotia. The party with the second-largest number of members becomes the official opposition.

Members of the Provincial Cabinet


The party that forms the government must also appoint members to be responsible for the various government departments. These individuals are called Ministers.

Constituency List


Nova Scotia is made up of 52 different areas called constituencies. Each constituency is represented in the House of Assembly.

The 52 elected members of the legislative assembly carry out their duties in the House of Assembly.
