Effects of Problem Gambling

As a health care professional, you may see physical signs of problem gambling as well.

The health effects of problem gambling can include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Poor sleep
  • Ulcers
  • Headaches
  • Muscle tension and pain

Many of these symptoms are stress-related. Again, if you even slightly suspect that your patient may have a gambling problem, ask the questions from the previous section.

Listen to Family and Friends

Often family and friends will speak to their family physician or health care provider when they have concerns about a patient. Even if a patient denies a problem, provide support and information for family and friends. Give them this URL, the contact information for the Problem Gambling Help Line and local Addiction Services office. We also have printed resource material for concerned family and friends that you can handout. Click on the Resources link on the left to get the information you need to help.
