Purpose

The Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps (NSYCC), a program of Nova Scotia Environment, was established in 1989. The NSYCC's mandate is to provide Nova Scotian youth age 17-24 with training and employment opportunities in the environmental field, while providing services to communities in Nova Scotia for the enhancement of the local environment. The NSYCC provides Nova Scotian youth with environmental work experience, an enhanced appreciation of the environment and their community, and develops skills for life-long learning (including team-building and leadership skills, increased knowledge for future employment and/or education ventures, and the ability to give back to their community and their environment).This program is a partnership between the NSYCC, Nova Scotia communities, and youth.

Regular Summer Program Employment Opportunities

Position - Support Staff

Support staff are hired to assist with the administrative duties associated with the program and act as support to the NSYCC crews throughout the province. These positions generally run from late April to early September. Support staff receive a wage of $10.50/ hr for 35 hours a week. Three positions are located in Halifax.

Duties

The Support Staff is responsible for coordinating and facilitating community partner meetings; recruiting, hiring, and training NSYCC crews across Nova Scotia; organizing a provincial youth training camp; providing administrative support to the NSYCC community partners; monitoring and assessing crew progress; conducting project site visits; collaborating on a daily basis with a three-person team; and being a responsible steward of the environment. This is a busy job which requires a lot of energy and a vested interest in youth, communities, and the environment of Nova Scotia. The Support Staff must be willing to travel to various communities in the province. The Support Staff reports directly to the NSYCC Administrator.

The ideal candidate will be a resident of Nova Scotia aged 17-26. The candidate should have:

Position - Regular Crew Workers

Two - four regular crew workers are hired for each community project. These positions run from late June to the end of August. Crew workers receive a wage of $9.15/ hr for 35 hours a week (currently under review). Community Partners for the 2008/2009 program year will be announced in March of 2008.

Duties

We have summer project work related to watershed management, waste-resource management, pollution prevention, air quality management, and environmental education & interpretation. Regular crew members work as a team with community-based organizations on one of the mentioned environmental projects.

Qualifications

In accordance with the mandate of the NSYCC, you must be within the target age group for this program (17 - 24). You must also be a team player, possess an understanding of environmental issues in Nova Scotia, be able to do physically demanding work, be willing to work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Access to a vehicle will be required to attend our July training camp in Truro.

Wages

$8.50 per hour (under review)
