Socioeconomic Analysis of Three New Wilderness Areas

Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes, Ship Harbour Long Lake, and Shelburne River

Discussion Paper and Summary now available.

The Wilderness Areas Protection Act requires a socioeconomic analysis when a wilderness area is being designated. It must look at the effects of the designation. It must be made public, prior to the designation.

Nova Scotia Environment contracted Jacques Whitford Limited to conduct a socioeconomic analysis. It looks at the effects of designating three new wilderness areas. They are located within Crown land parcels at Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes, Ship Harbour Long Lake, and Shelburne River. The analysis considers a range of social and economic benefits and costs of designating each candidate area.

The analysis has been prepared as a draft discussion paper. When finalized, the paper will be used to foster awareness and to support informed discussion and decision-making. The analysis has been reviewed by government departments and a university economist.

Now, individuals and groups are invited to provide comment on the draft discussion paper as part of the public consultation on these three new candidate wilderness areas. Public comments will be reviewed by Jacques Whitford, and considered by the consultant in finalizing the document. The final version will be released to the public when available.

You can view the draft discussion paper or summary from this website, or receive a copy by contacting Protected Areas Branch of Nova Scotia Environment by telephone or email. Written comments on the discussion paper will be accepted until February 27th, 2009 and can be submitted by email, or by mail to Nova Scotia Environment, Protected Areas, P.O. Box 442, Halifax, NS, B3J 2P8.
