Shubenacadie Waterway Background Study
The Shubenacadie Waterway is a 115 km series of interconnected canal, lake and river segments which bisect the province of Nova Scotia, joining the Atlantic Ocean at Halifax Harbour to Cobequid Bay at the head of the Bay of Fundy. The waterway is recognized as an important part of the province's cultural heritage, with connections to Mi'kmaq, Acadian and British settlement and use. It is well known for its tidal bore phenomenon, wildlife, and scenery. The waterway also has a long history of recreational use that continues today.
Nova Scotia Environment and Labour is currently conducting a background study on the Shubenacadie Waterway to; i) assess whether the waterway will meet Canadian Heritage River System selection and integrity guidelines, and ii) identify stakeholders and their interests in order to consider whether the waterway should be nominated as a Canadian Heritage River.
The background study area will focus on the full Shubenacadie Waterway and its associated values/resources, including the canal, lakes, and rivers that form part of this continuous waterway.
Through this study, the department will seek to:
- inventory and describe the waterway’s natural, cultural and recreational values;
- identify significant issues and opportunities;
- identify stakeholders and summarize their responsibilities and interests in relation to the waterway;
- determine the national significance of the waterway;
- develop options and recommendations for ensuring public and stakeholder involvement in heritage river consideration;
- recommend whether the waterway should be considered for Canadian heritage river nomination.
